Carparks are typically designed with high lighting levels for safety and security reasons so energy consumption is considerable: such applications can benefit significantly from the energy efficiencies of addressable lighting management including timed and occupation-related control, dimming and, where applicable, daylight linking. Carpark usage is predictable, with the majority of vehicles arriving and leaving at peak times, and within car parks associated with mixed-use applications – office, retail, leisure etc – it is possible to extinguish lighting while specific levels or areas are not in use. Automatic timed switching and dimming in conjunction with person and vehicle detection enables lighting levels to be reduced when areas are unoccupied. The incorporation of dimming enhances energy efficiency as lighting may be dimmed while still maintaining full uniformity of lighting and avoiding the unfriendly and potentially dangerous traditional practice of switching off selected circuits which results in pools of light and dark.
